Double Knitting yarns
Double knitting wool is our most popular yarn and there are over 60 in the range, including woollen, worsted and over-dyed versions.
DK knits up quickly without making things too bulky. It suits nearly everyone and works just as well for kids’ clothes as for men and women.
See the options for choosing in the panel on the right. Some of the leaner, smoother yarns like alpaca or the worsted spun Gotland and Jacob/mohair will make finer styles, while the fluffy pure Shetland or Jacob give slightly thicker results.
If you are thinking about blending colours, it's best to stick to a mix within a breed. There are eight shades of pure alpaca or six of the fluffier, lighter Shetland/alpaca blend, six shades in pure Shetland and six variations of Jacob/mohair blend plus five in pure Jacob, eight (including some over-dyed) in Gotland, and two in North Ronaldsay.
The natural whites and browns come with the rare breeds like Manx or Castlemilk Moorit, the deep chocolates of Black Welsh Mountain and Hebridean, or the charcoal of Zwartbles/mohair. Our latest is Border Leicester
Most of our patterns are in double knitting. For chunkier results some patterns use two strands doubled, and you can use a single colour or mix two to produce a marl-style result.
Normally each 50 gram ball of Double Knitting yarn will be around 110 metres (119 yards) long, but this varies from breed to breed, so to be on the safe side you should work on plus or minus 10%. See our information sheets and download the one on ball yardages.
